GARP, Saving Files, and File Transfer Instructions==>Linux to Windows Systems at ERAU

If you are on a classroom or Wx Center computer in Windows you must first reboot to Linux:

• Go to the "Start" button (lower left) and click "Shutdown" then "Restart."
• The computer will boot to Linux by default.
• Log in using your new Linux account that you obtained via the linked form from the Wx 365 page.
  
• If your current network password does not work you may have to look up your original network password via Blackboard.  If this does not work you may need to see Ian Boedeker or Mike Mascotte in the ERAU Weather Center.
  

1. Open a GARP window:
    a. click on the red hat (like the Windows Start Menu)
    b. click on ERAU Applications
    c. click on Weather Applications
    d. click on GARP

This opens GARP in your Linux home directory.  When you save images they will be put in this directory by default  unless you specify another location.

2. To display meteorological data:

    a. Move the cursor over the buttons to see what kind of data are available for display.
    b. Click on the left-most button "Radar and Satellite Data"

Most data types are satellite data. "NIDS" is NEXRAD radar data.

    c. Click on a data type of your choice.
    d. Click on an area or location.
    e. Click on a product type.
    f. Choose a time or several times to loop.
    g. Click "Display and Close"

3. To save your image(s); Note: before you save you may want to readjust the window size manually to get an image size that is easily displayable and not too large.
    a. Click on File.
    b. Click on Save.
    c. Click in the Filename box.
    d. Type in a filename -----.gif  (if saving multiple files it will use your filename and append numbers in your image order and automatically append the .gif extension).

The files are automatically stored in your Linux home directory.

4. To transfer files to your ERAU Windows account:
    a. Open a browser by clicking on the "world with a mouse" icon.
    b. go to Blackboard and log in.
    c. Click on the Online Services tab.
    d. Go to Personal NetStorage (on the right under ERAU Network Services) and click Go.
    e. disable popup blocker if necessary by clicking on the exclamation point (bottom right) then adding "netstorage" to your list.
    e. Log in (if necessary).
    f. Netstorage is your "f-drive."
    g. click file, then click upload
    h. browse for the filename(s) you just saved from GARP.
    i. select the file(s) and click "Open"
    j. click "Upload"
    k. Close the Netstorage window.
