A blackbody is a theoretical object that absorbs all the radiation that falls on it and radiates energy at the maximum possible rate per unit area at each wavelength for any given temperature. Naturally occurring emitters can only approach such an ideal object. How close an object can approach an ideal blackbody is related to the object's emissivity.
