Channel 2 of the AVHRR is located within the near infrared part of the spectrum. It is most sensitive to
wavelengths between .73 um and 1.1 um. You can use this imagery to:
- Observe water cover (water appears darker than channel 1)
- Use the ratio of channel 2 and channel 1 as a vegetative index
- Cut through atmospheric haze (haze transmits near infrared radiation)
- Discriminate between ice and water clouds.
