The ZA enhancement curve for thermal IR imagery combines aspects of stretching and changing the brightness of the image to enhance cold cloud tops. The warm part of the curve is darkened and stretched to reduce the distractive effects of the Earth's surface and low clouds. Then the upper part of the curve is stretched and brightened to emphasize the very cold cloud tops associated with deep convection.
