Channel 2 of the AVHRR is located within the near infrared part of the spectrum. It is most sensitive to wavelengths between .73 um and 1.1 um. You can use this imagery to:

• Observe water cover (water appears darker than channel 1)
• Use the ratio of channel 2 and channel 1 as a vegetative index
• Cut through atmospheric haze (haze transmits near infrared radiation)
• Discriminate between ice and water clouds.
